Wethering

When deciding whether to weather a goat or lamb before butchering, it is generally best to weather both as it significantly improves the taste and quality of the meat by removing the strong, “gamey” flavor associated with uncastrated male animals; making a wether goat or a wether lamb the ideal choice for butchering.

Key points about weathering:
Taste improvement:

Castrating young male goats and lambs before they reach sexual maturity greatly reduces the strong odor and flavor of their meat, making it more palatable.

Tenderness:

While some claim goat meat remains tender even from older animals, butchering a younger wether goat generally provides the most tender meat.

Market value:

Most meat markets prefer wether goats and lambs due to the better taste and consumer appeal.

its not a goat 🐐

My 1st Ram was born this week. I just got into the sheep business as well; got five ewe’s a couple months ago, and I just bought a Dorper Ram. Apparently some of the ewe’s were already pregnant, cause we just got our 1st baby Ram yesterday January 7th, 2025

He is for sale. I will wether him in March if no one buys him before hand, and butcher him in a years time; if no one buys him before that time.

$350 for Ram

$175 for Wether

meat prices will very, whole sheep will be approximately $350 after processing 🍖

On that note; I have a friend who has two unwethered Rams for sale also. One is very nice, a must buy for your herd; if you need a Ram.

Chili & Chops

.989 Organic Grass Feed. Chili is sold, Chops is still for sale.

I’ve not named then; because they are for sale, trade, or for food. I call them Chili and Chops, so people know not to get too attached to them. They were born to CutiePie and Bucky on November 22nd, 2024. Bucky is 50% Nubian and 50% Nigerian. CutiePie is mostly Pyrenean and Nigerian, I think. She is an unknown.

If you want them to breed, you can buy them in February 2025, before I wether them in May; they are $275/ea. Chili is the darker one; Chops is the lighter one, who looks a lot like his father.

After February and before July 2025, they will go for meat/wether price at $175/ea. You can use them as a companion animal, a Pet Organic Composting Machine; or you can take it to the market for your specific choice in cuts of meat. Wethers are less valuable or less expensive because of two reasons. They have been castrated, and can no longer breed. Butchers will charger at least $100-125 per goat to process them.🐐

After July, and before the end of the year; they will be butchered and the price for meat will be $350/ea. I will also have individually wrapped meat prices at that time, if you don’t want the whole goat. I will probably wait till August or September to cull them. The last goats I ended up waiting 9 months, one month longer then I had planned; and they turned out about 35lbs each and tasted pretty good. So this year, I might wait 10 months.

I had Summer Sausage made (with cheese and jalapeños), Jerky, Chops, Ground hamburger meat, Roast and more. So far, the Jerky was the least favorite; so I probably won’t be making much of that again.

Chili sold; Chops is still for sale, or will become food. Chili is a good looking goat, his brothers not bad either. Right now, I am wethering boy goats after they weened. We just recently started purchasing more land; so I will wether 50% of them in the future, and grow them both out on the new property. The non-wethers I will butcher sooner; and the wethers, later. From what I understand; wethering them makes the meat more fatty, not wethering them makes it more lean. We will see. What I do know is; if you don’t wether them, you have to butcher them sooner. Otherwise, the meat wont taste as good.

You can contact me at (816) 518-8804, (417)307-8588 and/or the goat trader at (870) 654-3201 his name is Kelby Howerton

Next Year, I’ll have Lamb. 2026, we’ll have Pork. Soon, we’ll have Chicken and Guinea Fowl.

Two more babies

Ramsay had her babies early this morning or late last night 🌙 She got mastitis last time, and lost her last two baby boys; while I was out over the road. 😿 I’ll be home in two days to check on her; my girlfriend took the pictures, and said they were nursing, so that’s a good sign. 🤞 I have some special Feed for her this go around, hope it helps 🙏 I need to formulate an herbal blend for nursing mothers, to help prevent things like that from happening again in the future; I just hadn’t had time to do it yet. Hopefully this supplement I bought will help 🙏

ND Buck

Nigerian Dwarf buck; born April 21st, 2024

I was going to keep him, because someone wanted to have me stud him to her goats. But that has changed, so now he’s for sale. I will be wethering him in September, if no one wants him for a buck. The people I got him from tried to burn his horns off unsuccessfully. So I’m willing to part with him for $150

After wethering: $100.

You can use them as a companion animal, a Pet Organic Composting Machine; or you can take it to the market for your specific choice in cuts of meat. Wethers are less valuable or less expensive because of two reasons. They have been castrated, and can no longer breed. Butchers will charger at least $125 per goat to process them.

Meat: $7/lbs after butchering. I will be taking him to market in November or Dec.

Tips to use when naming your goat

Picking names for pets can be straightforward for some and quite challenging for others. Whether you have a goat at your compound or are thinking of getting one, these tips will definitely help you get a name for them.

Use a famous name

Get your goat pet a name from a famous pet. Names like Benji and Rover are well known pet names for historical pets. Pick one for your pet and who knows? Maybe your pet will live to be remembered.

From the pet’s character

Many pet owners have used this method. Observe your pet for a while and learn its most attractive feature or character and name them after it. For instance, if you own a white goat, you can name it Snowy or Speedy if it is fast.

Choose names with a hard consonant sound

Names with hard consonant sounds are easy for the pet to learn and even hear when they are being called compared to names beginning with a vowel. Names beginning with letters like B, T, D, K, and S should be considered the most.

Pick a short name

A name with one or two syllables is the best. They are easy to learn and also brings out some authority in them. Such names include Pickle, Cookie, and Cosmo.

Source from the internet

The Internet is the source of all information you need. You do not have a name in mind, the internet will never disappoint you. All you need to do is type in your search and relax and wait for the results.

Things to avoid when naming your goat

Be careful not to give your goat pet a name that sounds similar to that of a command. Names sound similar in their pronunciation with names like sit, eat, sleep, no, should be avoided. It is always nice to give your pet a name that has a positive meaning or associated with their likable behavior. some names will portray hate or disliking towards the animal.

Best goat breeds to keep as pets

Pygmy

Pygmies are the commonest goat breeds kept as pets in the world. They are friendly and very likable animals which thrive in almost all climates. Their erect ears and medium-sized hair on their coats bring out all the beauty in them. They come in different colors and can have caramel, black, and agouti patterns.

Mini Toggenburgs

This is the oldest goat breed in history. They are mostly brown in color with some white strips on either side of their face, tail knees, and below their hocks. They are making very good pets and would not get bored spending time with a herd of this breed.

Mini myotonic

This goat can grow to be up to 25 inches tall and 150 pounds heavy. They mostly come in white and black colors but also have other color markings and patterns too. They are friendly and also to keep pets which makes them common pets in many homes. Unlike other gats, they are kept for their meat and not the milk. Read more here.

Nigerian dwarf

Nigerian dwarfs are reared for their milk and meat, which tend to be more nutritious compared to that of other breeds. They are beautiful and intelligent pets with medium-sized erect ears. They are fairly tall at 17-22 inches and weighing about 80 pounds.

Mini alpines

Mini alpines are 30 inches tall and are adapted to thrive in any climate. They might have a white neck or have grey or black markings on their heads. Their heavy milk production is what makes them popular in many homes. With proper feedings, these goats can produce up to 2400 pounds of milk annually. They are friendly and quite hyperactive and therefore need a bigger space to survive.
