The Best Baby Goat Names of 2022

Everyone knows after the ever-so-famous gateway livestock, the chicken, that you need to add goats. It’s only natural to have a milk source after you have an egg source and what better milk source than to start with baby goats? As a new goat-owner, you’re going to need the best baby goat names. I’m fully confident you’ll LOVE our suggestions- over 300+ of them!

More Than One Goat

Potato chips, money, vacation days, and baby goats. Some things are just better when you have more than one.

Goats are herd animals meaning they need to live with other animals of the same species. Even though you may be the most loving, caring, and attentive goat-owner that ever lived, you still need to have at least two goats.

They are very social creatures and provide hours of endless entertainment.

Goat Reproduction

The male goat is called a buck or a billy goat, the female is called a doe or a nanny goat. The full gestation period for a goat is typically around 150 days. Although a doe can get pregnant twice in one year, it is best for the goat to breed more than once per year.

A doe will give birth to 1 – 5 kids with two kids being average. However, 1-3 is very normal and anything above three is rare.

If we’re going to do some goat math and you have two expectations, within a year your herd of two could potentially grow to a herd of 12! That’s a lot of names to come up with.

Naming Your Goat Herd

Many farmers and homesteaders don’t name their meat goats, which is a personal choice.

We raise milk goats and all of them have names. In addition to our goats, we do raise pigs for meat and those we give food names. Like BBQ, Bacon Bits, etc.

When you start growing your herd, keeping up with all the names can be confusing, that’s why we like going with a theme.

Not only does this help us keep up with their names but it also helps me keep their records straight since all of our goats are registered. I can tell what year they were born by the theme of their names.

You can have a lot of fun with this when you poll your family members into the naming process. For instance, say you choose to name your goats after musicians, each member can pick their favorite musician.

What Should I Name My Baby Goat?

If you plan on raising multiple goats, more the merrier, then I would suggest choosing a herd theme for the year. In terms of goat record-keeping, if your herd has a theme for the year, it’s easier to know how old each goat is.

As an example, say in 2022 you picked tree names for your herd. Then in 2024 you have a goat named Willow, you know they are two years old.

Choosing a themed name for your herd for the year just makes life easier.

Speaking of record-keeping, record keeping is a huge part of goat ownership. Oak Hill Homestead offer FREE goat record keeping printables.

What Are Baby Billy Goats Called?

As I mentioned earlier, goats live in groups called herds. Female goats are called does, or nanny goats. And male goats are called Billy’s or bucks. All baby goats, whether male or female, are called kids.

I joke all the time telling people how many ‘kids’ I have.
